COLLEGE FIT GUIDE

Olin College of Engineering

Environment, fit, and tradeoffs

Olin offers an unusually small, project-driven engineering education where teamwork, design, and real-world problem solving begin in the first semester. It may appeal to students who want to build as they learn, know faculty and classmates well, and combine engineering with human-centered thinking. The same model can feel narrow or intense to someone who wants many non-engineering majors, a large social network, or lecture-centered technical study.

What Olin College of Engineering tends to offer

Engineering starts with projects

Olin introduces hands-on engineering in the first semester and emphasizes team- and project-based learning across its courses. Every student also completes a yearlong engineering capstone focused on a real-world problem.

A broad foundation within a focused college

All students build foundations in software, electronics, and mechanical systems, then pursue one of three ABET-accredited degrees: Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Engineering with an individualized or established concentration.

Academic reach beyond Olin

Olin integrates arts, humanities, social sciences, and entrepreneurship into its own curriculum and offers cross-registration with Babson College, Brandeis University, and Wellesley College, expanding options beyond engineering.

How the environment maps to Navastra preferences

HIGH

Learning by doing

Projects begin in the first semester, courses emphasize learning by doing, and every student completes a yearlong capstone with an external or community-facing context.

Uncertainty: The balance among building, analysis, writing, and direct partner contact varies by course and capstone option.

Source: About Our Curriculum

HIGH

Collaboration

Olin describes team-based learning as a recurring feature of its courses, and multidisciplinary project teams are central to both the common foundation and capstone experience.

Uncertainty: Frequent group work does not guarantee that every team functions well or that every student will prefer the amount of coordination involved.

HIGH

Faculty closeness

A 9-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio and a degree-seeking enrollment of fewer than 400 support repeated contact in a very small academic community.

Uncertainty: A low ratio indicates institutional scale, not the quality or availability of every individual advising relationship.

HIGH

Unconventional models

Olin's small scale, project-heavy pedagogy, three-degree portfolio, integrated nontechnical work, and cross-registration model differ from a conventional engineering school structure.

Uncertainty: Students may welcome project-based teaching while still wanting more departments, course sections, or conventional classroom formats.

Consider Olin College of Engineering if

  • You want to design, build, test, and revise from the beginning of college rather than wait for advanced courses.
  • You enjoy solving open-ended problems with teammates and explaining engineering decisions to other people.
  • You want a tiny engineering-focused community with close faculty contact and familiar classmates.
  • You value engineering that incorporates design, entrepreneurship, humanities, and the needs of users or communities.

Skip Olin College of Engineering if

  • You want a university with a wide range of on-campus majors, graduate programs, and large lecture courses.
  • You strongly prefer individual work or assessment over recurring team projects and collaborative problem solving.
  • You want a large athletics-centered social scene, broad campus anonymity, or many distinct student subcultures.
  • You are uncertain about engineering and want to explore many unrelated majors before choosing a direction.
